Some interesting facts about Chandler Arizona.
Chandler was born in the year 1891 surprisingly by a surgeon of the veterinary arts. Just south of the Salt River Valley near Mesa Arizona Dr Chandler bought approximately 80 acres of land from the federal government. He was a fan and student of the new science of irrigation and was very much involved in the engineering and design of a series of irrigation canals in the arid and dry Sonora desert.
Dr Chandler was apparently very successful for by about 1900 he had accumulated approximately 18000 acres to create his own ranch. He was an apparently skilled business man with a great deal of foresight and courage. At that time the Salt River Project in the area specified that only 160 acres were to be irrigated by each owner. Clearly this was not enough water for an 18000 acre ranch. So what did Dr Chandler do at that time, he began to sell ranch sites in Chandler. He broke up his 18000 acre ranch into 160 acre parcels and sold them off. He must have had a lot of vision because the newly finished Railroad called the Arizona Eastern Railroad was close enough by to provide transportation to his out of state new land buyers.
Surprisingly here in the Sonora desert in Chandler agriculture was big business even back at that time. Farmers generally raised or planted alfalfa, cotton and corn as well as some other grains. Many also would raise cattle and sheep. Some even raised ostriches surprisingly.
Nearly 1000 residents were occupying the Chandler area by around the year 1920. As we all know cars have become the major transportation medium replacing horses and buggies. This was near the time of the invention of limousines and tow trucks.
Even though the city of Chandler was growing the major business and source of revenue was still agriculture. Much of the cotton produced in the area was used by a tire company known as Goodyear to reinforce their rubber tires. Good year also produced many different fabrics where the cotton was also a source of a base material.
The citizens finally decided to incorporate and change Chandler into a true City or town. This occurred in the year 1920 in the month of May by a popular vote. Who do you think the mayor was for this newly created town? Of course it was Dr Chandler.
Arizona Avenue runs right through the center of Chandler on a north-south pathway. Downtown Chandler is full of great restaurants coffee shops and businesses in this day. Many of the restaurants have nightly entertainment and music and make a great destination for a limo ride.
